Nothing Is As It Seems

.It's hard to say just when I first realized that I am odd.

I have rarely brought my passions from that "common spring" described by poets and have long been obsessed with the simple and maddening contradiction of being human.

Perhaps by extension, I am obsessed with contradiction and odd juxtaposition in all forms, sweet and creepy, beauty and decay, complex simplicity - and this drives much of my thought and my art.

Every object speaks to me, whispering secret histories, begging me to see the essential truth of it and to free it of its conventional form, to peel away the layers of ordinariness and reveal the object for what it truly is: something "other", bound in this strange thrall to normalcy and longing to be freed or, at the very least, recognized.

None of us are as we seem.

We are all something more, something truer and closer to the bone than what you see on the surface. And yet, the surface itself is a fleetingly sweet confection, a thing to be pampered and painted and pierced and adored and decried and desired until, at last, the heart-stopping beauty of being in this body, just for a while, must end.

Such is the delicious travesty of contradiction which makes us so human. What is left and all that goes with it: the trappings of mourning and loss, the ephemeral, the exquisite forgotten detritus, the profoundly human pain of change, of becoming what we truly are -- I let these things scratch at me until I bleed, until the wound becomes a defile opening into me.. until thoughts spill out.. words spill out.. artifacts and assemblages and oddities spill out.. entangled in the simple and perfect beauty of bone and metal and glass and stone.

PreciousRuin is my offering to you: an invitation to explore and share the hidden treasures of this obscure world, an apothecary of the curious and mercurial, dainties to tempt both body and soul, altars and memento mori, assorted oddments and obscurae, sparkling jewels and dusty treasures, objects wondrous and strange.

Together, we will peel away the layers to reveal the Precious Ruin within.
